There are four common parabens – methylparaben, propylparaben, butylparaben, ethylparaben. All are used as a preservative.
Any product that contains water – often listed as aqua – needs some form of preservative due to water's inherent ability to support bacteria. Parabens have antibacterial and antifungal properties. They maintain the integrity of the product and increase shelf life.
Parabens can cause irritation and skin conditions
Naturally, the major cosmetics manufacturers wouldn't use parabens unless they considered them safe. So there's been a lot of research into parabens and its effects on human tissue.
The research shows that most people don't react to parabens, but some do. Parabens can cause irritation, dermatitis and rosacea.

Parabens can mimic the effects of oestrogen
Such adverse reactions have led to more detailed studies. Although not conclusive, some of the findings are even more disconcerting. Several studies have linked parabens with oestrogen disruption, leading to speculation about increased risk of breast cancer. Butylparaben was found to lower sperm count in rats. Parabens may worsen wrinkles and cause loss of skin tone Researchers at Japan's Kyoto Prefectural University of Medicine reported on the effects of sunlight on skin treated with facial cosmetics that contained methylparaben. |
They found that the methylparaben did not fully metabolise but remained in the outermost layer of the epidermis. This led them to conclude that methylparaben may contribute to wrinkling, dark spots and loss of skin tone.
Some natural skincare companies, committed to taking the no parabens route, use ethyl alcohol instead. Although ethyl alcohol occurs in nature, it has no place in the cells of higher organisms. As a skincare preservative, neither is it produced naturally, but is synthesised in a laboratory.
Although ethyl alcohol is antibacterial and antifungal, in concentrations above 7% – skincare products typically contain 5-15% alcohol – it can damage skin cells. This is why products that use alcohol as a preservative often contain castor oil or lanolin. These help offset the drying and destructive effects of the alcohol.
A genuine natural alternative to parabens and alcohol
Our choice for a natural preservative is Aromantic's Preservative 12. This contains phenoxyethanol and ethylhexylglycerin, which are synthetically produced from plants.
We don't use Preservative 12 in Super Natural 20% Vitamin E Balancing Facial Oil as the product doesn't contain water, but we do use it in other Super Natural Organic Skincare products.
Oil-soluble vitamins and essential oils: nature's preservatives
The essential oils and high concentration of vitamin E and vitamin A in Super Natural 20% Vitamin E Balancing Facial Oil provide antioxidant, antibacterial and antifungal protection and act to keep the product fresh.
We use no artificial preservatives. It truly is 100% natural.
